An invitation to learn Polyvagal Theory from the comfort of your own space and join us for tea!

Please join Gina Kiem and Niloufer Merchant, two passionate Polyvagal enthusiasts, in this 4-part series and explore getting to know your nervous system in a safe and creative embodied way.

What you will learn:

In this presentation, you will learn the three organizing principles of Polyvagal Theory (PVT), hierarchy, neuroception, and co-regulation, created by Dr. Stephen Porges and brought into clinical application by Deb Dana. Using Deb Dana’s framework for the application of PVT, you will have an opportunity to create your own personal autonomic nervous system maps. We will also explore how to apply PVT concepts from a cultural and racial context.

Understanding our cultural and racial trauma starts with you learning about your own nervous system first. This framework allows for developing an embodied experience of how your nervous system has been shaped historically, systemically, and personally, along with the impact of the pervasive nature of racism, colonialism (and other forms of oppression) on your nervous system.

As a participant, you will:

  • Learn the science behind the Polyvagal Theory Organizing Principles: Hierarchy, Neuroception, Co-regulation.

  • Gain a broader understanding of the evolution of the autonomic nervous system.

  • Create autonomic maps and use them to befriend your ANS.

  • Have a clearer, more embodied understanding of the impact of historical, intergenerational, and systemic oppression on your ANS.

  • Learn skills to track and interrupt habitual response patterns.

  • Learn meditation practices to inhabit the body and find wholeness within by engaging the co-regulating pathways of the Social Engagement System.

  • Learn techniques and neural exercises to work with portals of intervention including breath, movement, touch, and sound to help support the autonomic nervous system.

  • Become more Polyvagal informed by learning a new language and at the same time lean into the ancient wisdom that has built in systems and strategies to coregulate.

  • Explore culturally informed practices and strategies to find healing in your social connections and reclaim cultural and indigenous practices to regulate your ANS.

  • Discuss the role of PVT in creating social change and identify strategies for the future.
